Trail Bites: Late May Moab Trek 2006
By Chef Mark

It had been 3 years since my last trip to the Mecca… and since I missed hunting season last fall I deemed it a necessity… a Moab adventure. With some upgrades to the drivetrain; such as a Ford 8.8 in the rear and recently installed Aussie Locker, I felt confident with a newly acquired trailer in tow all thanks to Josh at Crawler Tech 4x4 in Denver. The trailer itself has a unique history, as it had previously hauled rock up the well known Holy Cross Trail just south of Leadville, Colorado in 2000, to fix various spots en route to the “The City”. The trailer has a CJ axle, with locking hubs (great conversation piece obviously not functional), 2.5 inch Rancho Springs, and 32 inch BFG MT’s.

The intent was to venture down along the Colorado River via Rabbit Valley following the Kokopelli Trail to Cisco and then on to Moab. My plans changed slightly after some confusing map details. I purchased this great one-person camp tent that sets up in a matter of seconds, a Tent Cot if you will, at a local sporting goods store. There is also a two-person version which I hope to acquire in the future.

Para Carry - Nice but...

LDA Pare Carry 9Really, I stopped by Discount Gun Mart to pick up some targets.  Sitting in the display case was a compact 9mm based on the 1911 frame - ParaUSA Para Carry 9.  The compact pistol caught my eye as filling a niche that I was looking for.  While I didn’t walk out with the semi-auto, I did place a down payment and filled out the necessary background check paperwork. After the 10-day California waiting period, I had the Para Carry 9 in my possession.  First things first was a good cleaning.  Then, it was finding the opportunity for some shooting time.  That is where life became interesting.

CA Ban on Traditional Ammo May Lead to Ban on All Hunting Ammo

The California Assembly recently passed a ban on traditional ammunition containing lead that may result in a complete ban on all hunting ammunition.

Assembly Bill 711, which would outlaw the use of lead for hunting in California, passed the State Assembly on May 22nd by a vote of 44-21.  In a twist that presents a threat to all hunting, passage of AB 771 by the California Senate could stop all hunting with rifles as the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) may consider alternative rifle ammunition as “cop killer bullets” triggering a ban on those as well.
